“Community is first of all a quality of the heart. It grows from the spiritual knowledge that we are alive not for ourselves but for one another. Community is the fruit of our capacity to make the interests of others more important than our own. The question, therefore, is not ‘How can we make community?’ but, ‘How can we develop and nurture giving hearts?’”
– Henri J.M. Nouwen (1932-1996), priest, professor, psychologist, and writer
As the last leaves fall here on North Mountain, we here at Future Generations University are reminded that communities—like the forests that surround us—are alive in every season. What looks like rest is really renewal. As autumn settles across the many landscapes that are home to our students, alumni, and partners, comes a time of introspection and connection. Beneath the quiet soil, roots are deepening, networks are forming, and life prepares to bloom again. Together, we all prepare for the year to come.
Communities exhibit resilience in the same way. In the midst of an ever changing world, communities endure. Seasons shift, people move, challenges arise — and yet, the bonds built through shared purpose remain steady. At Future Generations University, we specialize in change. We teach our students how to harness chaos and uncertainty to effect positive community change that lasts. No matter the community in question, what fuels the work of our students and alumni is compassion and commitment to make the world a better place. In a world defined by change, it is generosity of heart that is our anchor. We walk forward together.
Generosity is what drives and defines Future Generations University. It is there when students collaborate across continents, when alumni invest their knowledge back into their hometowns, and when communities come together to improve their own futures and create a nicer place to live. Our work begins and ends with people who care enough to act together — people, like you, with giving hearts.
It is through compassion that the University will continue to grow. In this season of change, we reach out to you to ask for your support. The University’s universe of learning depends on people like you. Without your support, the work of our students, alumni, and communities could not have the impact that they do. Your gift is what keeps this living network of change growing, reaching more people who are ready to build a better future.
Across continents and communities, the spirit of generosity shines through the people of Future Generations University. It lives in those who turn learning into leadership, and leadership into change. Your participation and support for Future Generations University changes lives and generates new futures around the world. We could not do this work without you. Thank you!
Your support now allows us to reach more students, expand local projects, and sustain the model of community-based education that uplifts entire regions. The stories included here reflect the impact of individuals who have transformed Future Generations University’s diverse learning paths into lasting community improvements:
- Alumni extending the circle of community – Ikwo Oka (Class of 2005), Bill Price (Class of 2025)
- Students growing their education outward into collective good – Corey Beahm, Masturah Pakbin Alizada
- Community networks seeding a brighter future through connective action –Shakshila Village mothers in Nepal, PreK-12 educators in Morgan County, West Virginia
Each of the stories on this page is a reminder that community is not a project — we must become the change. It lives in the choices people make every day to care for one another and to act for the common good. From Nigeria to Nepal, from Appalachia to Afghanistan, each of these stories is connected by one simple truth: generosity of heart transforms learning into life-changing action. Every student, alumnus, and community reminds us that our shared humanity is the world’s most renewable resource.
As the year comes to a close, we invite you to keep this generosity in motion. Your gift ensures that the seeds of change continue to grow — that mentors like Ikwo, innovators like Bill and Corey, visionaries like Masturah, and communities like Elizabeth’s and the women of Shakshila village can keep building a more just, compassionate, and regenerative world.
Your gift to Future Generations University keeps this practice alive. Your investment helps more students continue their studies, more entrepreneurs create opportunities, and more communities thrive through local leadership. No gift is too small and connects to a global network of generosity and action that connects people across mountains, valleys, and continents. Help us continue to nurture just and lasting change for generations yet to come.
Thank you for being part of this community — one that grows not from what we take, but from what we give.
To express our gratitude, we’ve created a small token of appreciation for those who give $50 or more this year end - a symbol of the shared hope and generosity that unite the Future Generations University community.
Together, we can continue to nurture the giving hearts that make all things grow. Thank you for your gift!
